The island is steeped in history and has a variety of unique areas for events and only a stones throw for Sydney CBD. The Turbine Shed is the largest building on the island, built 1946, it was the largest building in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. With raw industrial character, exposed steel structure, bare concrete floors and soaring ceilings. The Convict Workshops were built in 1840 when the island was a gaol. The three rooms have convict slab sandstone walls, raw concrete floors, large arched windows and high ceilings. Impressive pieces of industrial machinery dating from WWI and WWII are embedded in the floor.
